PM Modi to inaugurate iconic ‘Atal Bridge’ over Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the iconic ‘Atal Bridge’ on the Sabarmati river in Gujarat's Ahmedabad on Saturday.

PM Modi will be on a two-day-journey, beginning today, when he will address the ‘Khadi Utsav’ programme to be held on Sabarmati Riverfront, according to an official release said.

“From the same venue, the prime minister will inaugurate the foot-over bridge, built by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation and named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” it said.

A day before the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to share an image of the bridge.

“Doesn’t the Atal Bridge look spectacular!” he wrote.

“An exemplary landmark of the Sabarmati Riverfront!” he said in another tweet as he shared a video of the bridge lit in the shades of tricolour.

‘Atal Bridge’ is a foot-over bridge on the Sabarmati river, open only for pedestrians. Cyclists can also use this bridge to cross the river while avoiding traffic.

It stands between Ellis Bridge and Sardar Bridge.

It has been constructed with 2,600 metric tonnes of steel pipes and is 300 metre long and 14 metre wide in the middle.

Its railing has been built with glass and stainless steel and the roof is made up of colour fabric.

It is likely to offer a wonderful treat to the tourists as well as locals as it connects a flower garden on the western-end of the riverfront and the upcoming arts and culture centre on the eastern-end. People can also view the riverfront from the middle of the waterbody.
