Robert Vadra lands in controversy again, inquiry expands to Dubai
New Delhi, May 31 (IBNS) Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra is once again amidst controversy over his purported proxy ownership of the London house of an arms dealer.
The inquiry has now expanded to the tax haven of the British Virgin Islands and Dubai.
Earlier on Tuesday, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi dared the government to "conduct an investigation if you have proof" against his son-in-law, reports said.
NDTV broke the news on Monday that the Finance Ministry is determining whether Sanjay Bhandari, who is being investigated for financial crimes, bought the property in 2009 and provided proxy ownership for Vadra, who is also being investigated for controversial land deals in Haryana.
Vadra's lawyers have, however, said the report is completely without basis.
"They make these false allegations every day," Gandhi said. "Let them hold an inquiry... the truth will then emerge," she said.
Gandhi alleged that this is part of the government's agenda to deliver a "Congress-mukt Bharat".
The NDTV report highlighted that the government's inquiry is based on emails and other data recovered when Bhandari's offices and homes were raided.
NDTV could not verify the authenticity of the emails, but the government report cited exchanges between Vadra and his executive assistant, Manoj Arora, discussing payments and renovation for the London home.
The report said their emails were sent to Sumit Chadda, a relative of Bhandari based in London. The house, bought in 2009 for Rs. 19 crore, was sold a year later.
The Congress has alleged that Vadra is being persecuted by the government with the help of fabricated charges.
