New Delhi/IBNS: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi led an INDIA bloc protest in the national capital on Tuesday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Rahul Gandhi climbs barricade

Rahul Gandhi was seen moving through a large crowd of protesters before climbing a police barricade and waving the national flag as opposition MPs marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters.

The march was stopped by security personnel near the NITI Aayog office. Several opposition MPs subsequently sat on the road in protest.

Rahul and his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained along with several other opposition leaders.

They later entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises while attempting to proceed towards the ECI office.

Rahul attacks government, ECI

In a video message, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government was preventing opposition MPs from meeting Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commissioners.

“Today, more than 300 opposition MPs wanted to meet Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commissioners, but we were stopped,” he said.

Rahul further alleged that the government was suppressing the voice of the people and questioned the significance of democracy if elected representatives were not allowed to meet the Election Commission.

He also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and Gyanesh Kumar of being involved in alleged “vote chori”.

INDIA bloc leaders join protest

The protest was attended by several INDIA bloc leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and RJD leader Manoj Jha.

Other opposition leaders, including TMC's Derek O'Brien and CPI (M)'s John Brittas, also participated in the march. Several leaders were detained after police stopped the protesters from proceeding towards the ECI headquarters.

The INDIA bloc has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar's resignation amid its objections to the SIR exercise.

The Election Commission has rejected allegations of bias and maintained that decisions relating to SIR were taken unanimously.
