Sundarbans to become a new district of WB, Kolkata to get its Eiffel Tower
Kolkata, Nov 27 (IBNS): West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced to carve out a new full-fledged district-The Sundarbans- in next year.
"We have decided to make river-based Sundarbans a new district of West Bengal before Durga Puja in 2016," Mamata Banerjee said while she addressing a public meeting here at Sandeshkhali in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district.
CM Mamata Banerjee also announced that Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s 125th birth anniversary will be observed in every block of West Bengal on Dec 30.
"A chair will be named after Dr Ambedkar at Calcutta University and a Panchayat Training Centre, named after him, will be set up," Banerjee said.
Besides flagging off Sabuj Sathi scheme for North 24 Parganas district, she inaugurated few road projects, irrigation schemes, Shishu Aaloy scheme, several health care projects, new hostels, water supply projects and laid the foundation stones for a bouquet of projects including road and irrigation, renovation of administrative buildings, minority hostels and godowns.
During the event, Banerjee also distributed several services including Kanyashree, Yuvashree, Sikshashree, equipment to fishermen, Kisan and artisan credit cards, different agricultural machineries and equipment, pattas and financial assistance for natural disasters.
Slamming the Centre and the oppositions, Banerjee said, "We do not want alms from the Centre. We just want our due right. Centre is taking a way a major share of our revenues because of the sins of the CPI-M. Despite financial problem, the surge of development will continue in Bengal. My challenge to Opposition- 'Catch me if you can'."
The Chief minister on Friday also laid the foundation stone for the construction of Eiffel Tower's replica in Kolkata's satellite town Rajarhat New Town.
The 55-meter replica of Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower will be built by the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) at Eco Park in Rajarhat New Town area.
The replica tower will also have two tiers where tourists can climb up to the observation room, at a height of 25 meters from the ground, and get a panoramic view of the city. Apart from two elevators, the building plan also includes a coffee shop and a souvenir shop.
Meanwhile, the WB government on Friday published the notification of sixth pay commission for its employees.
