Supreme Court orders look-out notice for Russian woman missing with child amid custody row
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ordered the External Affairs and Home ministries to issue look-out notices to trace the Russian woman, who went missing with her five-year-old son from her marriage to an Indian man.
According to an NDTV report, Saikat Basu met Victoria while working in China as an engineer in an IT company. Later, they married in India in 2017.
However, their relationship fell apart, with Saikat Basu alleging that his wife was involved in an extramarital affair with a Russian embassy official. The couple has filed for a divorce, and their divorce proceeding is currently underway at a family court in Delhi’s Saket.
Saikat Basu has claimed that Victoria Basu has been missing with their son, who was with his mother per a custody deal, since July 7
Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi directed the Delhi Police to 'trace the missing child without any loss of time' and hand over custody to the father and seize Victoria Basu’s passport.
The court also reprimanded the Russian woman’s counsel, who denied knowledge about her whereabouts.
"You people know everything... you think you can play with us? We will take counsels also to task... You wait...," Justice Kant shot back at the counsel’s response, according to the NDTV report.
Saikat Basu has claimed that his estranged wife was seen entering the Russian embassy in Delhi via the back gate earlier this month, accompanied by luggage and an embassy official.
He expressed apprehension that Victoria may have since left India with their son.
Victoria’s father is a retired officer with the Russian intelligence service.
The custody deal allowed her to see her son three times a week, according to the report.
Saikat Basu claimed he saw his son last on May 22 when she took custody of the boy.
He claimed she was seen entering the embassy on July 4.
