Lucknow, Aug 20 (IBNS): The United States Ambassador to India, Richard Verma, visited Lucknow August 19-20.
On his first visit to the city, Ambassador Verma met with Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and several opposition leaders. He also had meetings on issues of culture, education, trade, and business.

On Thursday, the Ambassador toured the famous Lucknow Residency and met with students of the Isabella Thoburn College.

He also met with the patrons of the American Corner there.

In his remarks to the students he said, “Isabella Thoburn is really symbolic of the strong people-to-people ties that define the U.S.-India relationship, and that have enriched both of our societies."

Speaking on U.S.-India he said, “At the heart of our relationship is the creative and economic potential of our people, and one of the keys to unlocking this potential is in education for women and girls.  When women are educated and empowered, they bring the rest of the society with them.  IT College is a leader in this regard.”

Ambassador Verma also met with students of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at their campus and visited the NGO SEWA.

When taking office on Jan 2, 2015, Ambassador Verma said, “I am honored to serve as U.S. Ambassador to India at such an exciting time in our bilateral relationship.  I look forward to meeting the Indian people and working together with the Indian government on our shared goals of security, development, and prosperity.”
