US govt backs India's request to extradite 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana, asks Supreme Court to dismiss his plea

The US government has backed India's request to extradite Tahawwur Rana, who is a suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack, media reports said.

It has called upon the US Supreme Court to reject "the petition for a writ of certiorari" submitted by Rana, The Times Of India reported.

Rana, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, has petitioned in the top US court to prevent him from getting extradited.

He had previously petitioned in the lower courts including the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, in San Francisco, but did not meet success.

"The (India US Extradition) Treaty permits Rana's extradition " the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit had ruled in August.

He then filed a "petition for a writ of certiorari" with the Supreme Court.

A writ of certiorari is a request to a higher court to review the order of the lower court.

In his plea, Rana contends that he was previously tried and cleared in the federal court of Northern District of Illinois (Chicago) regarding the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.

"India now seeks to extradite him for trial on charges based on the identical conduct at issue in the Chicago case," his lawyer has petitioned.

The 2008 Mumbai attacks were a series of coordinated terrorist strikes across 12 locations in Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

A total of 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba carried out 12 shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai.

The attacks, which drew widespread global condemnation, left 175 people dead, including nine of the attackers, and more than 300 injured.
