Vice President election to take place on Aug 6

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Wednesday announced that the election for the Vice President of India will be held on Aug 6.

The tenure of incumbent M. Venkaiah Naidu ends on Aug 10.

The votes will be counted the day polling takes place, the poll panel said.

The notification for the election will be issued on July 5 while the last date of filing nomination is on July 19.

The scrutiny of nomination will take place on July 20 and the last date of withdrawal candidature is on July 22.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.

The college consists of 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, its 12 nominated members and 543 elected members of the Lok Sabha.

The college comprises 788 members of both Houses of Parliament. Since, all the electors are members of both Houses of Parliament, the value of vote of each MP will be the same, it said.
