Vijay likely to take oath tomorrow as Tamil Nadu chief minister after dramatic majority push

Actor-turned-politician Vijay is likely to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Saturday after staking claim to form the government and telling Governor R V Arlekar that he has the support of 118 MLAs — the exact number needed for a majority in the 234-member Assembly.

NDTV, quoting sources, said the swearing-in ceremony is expected around 11 am, though an official announcement from Raj Bhavan is awaited.

High drama before final breakthrough

The oath move follows a day of intense political drama, with shifting alliance talks and uncertainty over numbers.

Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had won 108 seats in its debut election, emerging as the single largest party and ending the decades-long dominance of DMK and AIADMK.

However, the party remained 10 short of the majority mark, forcing Vijay into frantic negotiations with smaller parties and independents over the last two days.

Governor Arlekar had reportedly insisted that Vijay provide proof of majority support before being invited to form the government.

Support from smaller parties

Sources said TVK secured backing from sections of Indian National Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a few independents, helping the party touch the magic number of 118.

The Left parties are expected to offer outside support, while Congress is likely to seek cabinet representation.

Historic political shift

If sworn in tomorrow, Vijay’s rise would mark a historic political shift in Tamil Nadu, ending a 62-year era dominated by the DMK-AIADMK duopoly and making TVK one of the fastest-rising regional forces in recent Indian politics.

From cinema superstardom to Fort St George, Vijay now appears just hours away from his biggest role yet.
