Vijay’s TVK reaches magic number by securing support from Congress, Left, VCK: Reports

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is likely to cross the majority mark with support from the Congress, VCK, CPI and CPI(M), according to media reports, paving the way for the party to form its first government in the state.

If the numbers hold, the development would end the uncertainty surrounding government formation in the southern state, long dominated by the AIADMK and DMK.

Vijay had sought an appointment with the Governor at 4.30 pm on Friday, though the meeting was later rescheduled to 6 pm, TVK sources told India Today.

According to reports, Vijay is expected to stake claim to form the government — a first for his party in the state. In the 234-member Assembly, TVK required 118 seats to secure a majority.

The Congress (5), CPI and CPI(M) (2 each), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) [2] have reportedly extended support to TVK, helping the party reach the crucial 118-seat mark.

TVK shakes up Tamil Nadu politics

In its electoral debut, actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats, dramatically disrupting the decades-old bipolar dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Traditional Dravidian blocs suffer setbackThe ruling DMK was reduced to 59 seats in the election, while the AIADMK-BJP alliance secured 47 seats, marking a major setback for both traditional Dravidian power centres.
