Voting begins in second phase of Assam panchayat polls

Guwahati, Dec 9 (IBNS): People queued up at polling booths in Assam’s 10 districts as balloting began in the second phase of the panchayat polls in the state.

A total of 64,21,518 voters will exercise their franchise in 9428 polling booths to decide the fate of 35,056 candidates contesting in the four tier 10,909 constituencies.

Over 75% of 97,45,709 voters had cast their votes in the first phase of panchayat election, which was held on Dec 5.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, the second phase of panchayat poll will be held in 10 districts of the state and these are – Nalbari, Barpeta, Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Hojai, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj.

A total of 35,056 candidates have contested for 169 Zila Parishad Member (ZPM), 895 Anchalik Panchayat Member (APM), 895 Gram Panchayat President (GPP) and 8950 Gram Panchayat Member (GPM) constituencies.

Out of 9428 polling stations, 1866 polling stations are marked as very sensitive, 3081 are sensitive and 4481 are comparatively safe.

Meanwhile, over 50,000 polling personnel and more than 40,000 security personnel have been deployed in the second phase of panchayat polls.

According to the Assam State Election Commission, 734 candidates have been declared elected unopposed including 442 candidates for the first phase and 292 for the second phase.

The counting of votes for both phases will be held on Dec 12.
