Was raised in poor background, understand pain of farmers: Modi
Bengaluru, Apr 3 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he understands the pain of the farmers and wants to provide equal opportunities for the people in the villages.
Addressing a big rally in Bengaluru, he said he wants to reform land laws to give more benefits to the farmers so that they never have to look back.
"People living in villages should get equal facilities. We have been unfair to farmers for the last 60 years. I have come from a humble background. I can understand the pain of people who come from poor backgrounds," Modi said.
"I am surprised at people who are pretending to fight for farmers' rights for political gains. We want to work to reform land laws to give more benefits to the farmers so that they never have to look back," he said as his government is facing severe oppositions on the latest version of the government's controversial land acquisition ordinance.
"Agriculture sector needs technology, infrastructure upgradation...farmer needs good roads, water in the fields, 24/7 power," said he.
Taking a dig at the Congress party which is ruling the state of Karnataka., he said, "For a decade this perception existed in the minds of people & across the world. In such circumstances people reposed their faith in BJP."
"How are we being criticised- that whatever is happening has been going on for long...we also had done the same," said he.
Modi claimed that in the last ten months, the BJP government reversed the setbacks brought about by the Congress' "poor governance."
"When files come to me I see projects were stalled for years. I was surprised- what were they doing. We have taken quick decisions. When our intentions are correct, we will produce the right results," said he.
He said the Congress did not have the intentions to work.
"Sometimes niyat (intention) is more powerful than niti (policy) - your niyat was not right, ours is right, so we are on the path of development," said he.
Speaking about his measures to combat corruption, "Even after Supreme Court verdict (black Money) they (Congress) didn't want to form an SIT. As soon as we came to power, we formed SIT for Black money."
He said his government is working towards 'a dream of digital India.'
"We are giving importance to Digital India and are moving to mobile governance. Digital India enhances accountability. Opportunities of employment and entrepreneurship will increase with Digital India initiatives," said he.
He said his government considers the States equal partners in India's progress.
"Irrespective of what party the State Government is, all are equal for us.
Cooperative federalism will be implemented in letter and spirit. Government of India will support all states in areas of development," said he.
Modi is in Bengaluru to participate in a two-day brainstorming session of the BJP.
