Kolkata/UNI: West Bengal Minister for Transport and Housing Firhad Hakim was on Tuesday sworn in as the Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for the second consecutive term.

Protem Speaker Ram Pyare Ram administered the oath of office and secrecy to Hakim at the lawn of the KMC complex.

Mala Roy was sworn in as the chairperson of the 144-ward KMC.

Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress swept the prestigious KMC election, winning 134 seats in the December 19 elections.

Sixty-two-year-old Hakim, a close lieutenant of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, became Mayor for the first time in mid-2018 when Sovan Chatterjee had to quit the office after differences cropped up with the Chief Minister.

Soon after the swearing-in, Hakim said he was a loyal worker of the party and wanted to serve the people of Kolkata to the best of his ability so as to fulfill Banerjee's aspirations and her vision for Kolkata.

"Our motto is to serve the people and make Kolkata one of the best cities of the globe," Hakim said.

A number of ministers and Trinamool leaders were present during the swearing-in ceremony.
