Bengal police officer directs Aaleya, a film on communal violence and social ills
Kolkata, May 28 (IBNS): Dr Humayun Kabir, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from West Bengal, has filled 'Aaleya', his directorial debut with his first-hand experience of maintaining law and order and handling social unrests.
The trailer for the soon to be released Bengali film was held recently in Kolkata in the presence of Humayun Kabir, associate director Anikhet Chattopadhyay, actor Tonushree Chakraborty and producer Pradip Churiwal.
'Aaleya' is based on the 2002 riot that took place in India and the social ills associated with it.
The film brings forth the female voice to the forefront.
The four lead characters in the film -- played by Tonushree Chakraborty, Saayoni Ghosh, Priyanka Sarkar and Ankita Chakraborty -- speak against issues like triple talaq, child marriage and lack of education of girl child.
Tonushree Chakraborty plays the role of a police officer who is determined to restore the dignity of a girl child, Aaleya, played by Priyanka.
Speaking to IBNS, Dr Humayun Kabir, said, “The film will say a lot against social evils and why education is important.”
"Generally educating women is seen as an affair that is to be done after marriage but in reality it never happens and she remains uneducated throughout her life,” said Dr Kabir.
Set in Taki-Hasnabad area, the film will also discuss communal disturbances alongside a murder mystery that reveals a lot about the ill practices of society.
“It was really a challenging film and as an actor I too had to train a lot to deliver in front of the camera," said Tonushree Chakraborty.
Tonushree’s character, 'Sumana' is quite a forceful one and according to her, “Sumana will inspire people and will make the audience proud.”
When asked about the character’s dimension in the film she replied to IBNS, "Sumana is rough and tough and at the same time she is emotional. But her realization is the main thing that will attract all.”
Anikhet Chattopadhyay is the assistant director of the film while Savvy has scored the music.
The film is scheduled for a June 29 opening.
