Deportation
Imran Khan gets 'Leave India' notice after CEC protest, his partner Lekha Washington reacts
Mumbai/IBNS: Actor Imran Khan, who participated in protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, has been asked by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to leave India by October 28, citing his American citizenship and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status.
Imran Khan attended Mumbai protest
Imran participated in a protest held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10, alongside his girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayn Marie Khan.
All three were detained during the protest.
The Delhi Belly actor later said he had attended the demonstration to understand why freedom of movement was being restricted.
He was released later that evening, although reports described further exchanges with the police following his initial detention.
Lekha Washington shares first reaction
In her first reaction to the 'Leave India' notice served on Imran, Washington shared a picture of the two on Instagram.
The photograph, which captured them inside a police van, was captioned "just" with several heart emojis.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya files complaint
The FRRO in Mumbai issued the notice following a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya, who questioned Imran's participation in a political protest despite holding a US passport and an OCI card.
Somaiya had approached the Mumbai Police, seeking verification of the actor's citizenship status.
He also questioned whether a foreign national holding an OCI card could participate in a political programme in India.
