New Tolly thriller featuring Ray's invention Prakhar Rudra

Kolkata, Apr 10 (IBNS) Cashing in on the name of Prakhar Rudra, the fictional trigger-happy sleuth of Lalmohan Babu, again the funny man and writer associate of iconic fictional detective hero Feluda penned and filmed by Satyajit Ray, a Bengali film now goes on the floors pitting Rudra in different combat sequences as a battle-resolute army man.

The film titled 'Sathe Jokhon Prakhar Rudra' (When Prakhar Rudra is Around) draws the name of sleuth protagonist from 'Saharay Sihoran'. a tacky thriller by the fictional Ray character Lalmohan Ganguly whose crime thrillers were always dissected and the flaws detected by Feluda (as sketched by Satyajit Ray in his Feluda novels to infuse comic elements in the character of Lalmohan a.k.a Jatayu and give relief to the readers).

"Yes the original Prakhar Rudra character in Feluda novels is a subject of comic relief as Feluda - the super-sleuth of Ray - often points out the flaws in his crime solving techniques to its creator and his writer-companion Lalmohan Ganguly. But my Prakhar Rudra only bears similarity with the name and also the fact that he is brave and a quintessential Bengali," young, popular Tollywood actor Shataf Figar, having got critical acclaim in the whodunit thriller  89 earlier, tells IBNS.

The character has also traces of the Akshay Kumar-starrer Holiday with the main lead taking part in real life combat situations as well as an undercover agent who leaves the regular job.

"There will be outdoor locations in North Bengal and Kolkata to create the real life army camp effect. Though not in real locations. And a major part of our film will be centred on Prakhar Rudra, a six-footer wearing the robes of a civilian who untangles a web of mystery," director-producer Abir Biswas says.

Actor Saswata Chatterjee, a.k.a IB cop Shabor Dasgupta in Ebar Shabor and it's sequel Eagler Chokh, essays the pivotal role of Prakhar's mentor Bhaskar Mukherjee.

Saswata, also appearing in Anurag Basu's Jagga Jassos and another Bollywood production, and feels alternating between Mumbai and Kolkata gives him the kick as an actor.

He opines that the Bengali film industry now offers an exciting opportunity to actors to be part of different genre of thriller films and this corroborates the literary-minded Bengali audience will not turn its back if given the right product mix of entertainment and content.

Paoli Dam (Meghla), Sampurna Lahiri (Priya) Shantilal Mukherjee and Chandan Sen are among the important cast of the film produced by Egaal Mmotion Pictures.
