Saheb Bibi Golaam not a dirty film : Rajkahini girl Parno Mitra

Kolkata, Aug 25 (IBNS) After the audience acclaim for Rajkahini where she had essayed a brothel girl affected by partition, actor Parno Mitra now enacts a sweet, simple girl in Saheb Bibi Golaam of journalist-turned-director Pratim D Gupta.

"I have been consistently trying to portray different kinds of roles ever since Ranjana Ami Aar Asbona by Anjan-da (Anjan Dutt) happened. From comic capers to serious roles to musicals to thrillers and simpleton girls," Parno tells IBNS at the music launch of the film in Kolkata.

Wrongly hearing the word 'dark film' as 'dirty film' when a correspondent questioned her about Saheb Bibi Golaam's dark genre, Parno initially hit back saying  "If you ask whether it is a dirty film, I strongly object. Noting is remotely connected with the concept of dirty in Saheb Bibi Golaam."

But the confusion was soon cleared and Parno Mitra replied smiled, "Ohh! You asked if it was a dark genre film. Yes, may be, but it is a thriller never the less. And for understanding in what particular genre the film is, you need to watch the film. It is a slick, edgy thriller at one level and a sweet, romantic story from another angle. And all characters are properly etched out and not ephemeral," she said.

Hailing the Bengali audience for being receptive of even weird, uncanny genre films these days if the content is good, she said, "From the success story of several of high budget, middle budget films in recent times, and even smaller ones, it again proves that films with varied contents will clinch if the execution of the story is good and people can relate to them."

Coming to back to Saheb Bibi Golaam, which she affirmed has no connection with Bimal Mitra's classic of the same name, Parno said one reason she was looking forward to this film is being part of a cast where her debut director Anjan was the protagonist.

"Though we don't share space here as such but he looks hugely flamboyant and has a certain aura whenever cameras roll. It is a treat to watch Anjan-da in Saheb Bibi Golaam," Parno signs off.

Anubrata Bhalo Achho actor Ritwik Chakraborty, essaying the character of taxi driver Golaam, confides though he had no love lost for yellow taxi drivers in the past, portraying the character in the film made him realise being behind the wheels is not their sole identity but they are also someone's brother, someone's father, someone's husband or boyfriend, and someone's son."

The film, already premiered in Mumbai this week, will be released on Friday. It has been produced by Friends Communication.
