Kolkata/IBNS: Chander Pahar, the iconic Bengali adventure film, gets a re-release on September 20, as a tribute to the 130th birth anniversary of the legendary Bengali author Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.

Originally released in 2013, Chander Pahar had set an unprecedented milestone in the Bengali film industry, becoming the highest-budget Bengali film ever made at the time.

Directed by Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Chander Pahar stars Dev as Shankar, whose dynamic performance anchored the film, alongside a talented cast including Gérard Rudolf as Diego Alvarez, Shankar’s enigmatic companion in his African exploits, and Laboni Sarkar as Shankar’s mother.

The film also features spectacular cinematography by Soumik Haldar, shot in the wilderness of South Africa, which remains one of its standout achievements.

Adapted from Bibhutibhushan’s thrilling novel, Chander Pahar follows the epic journey of Shankar Roy Chowdhury, a young Bengali adventurer who travels to Africa in search of fortune and faces wild dangers, mythical creatures, and untamed landscapes.

The film's breathtaking depiction of Africa and its action-packed narrative captivated audiences far beyond Bengal, achieving remarkable success in non-traditional markets like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune when it was released in 2013.

Even after 11 years, the film continues to resonate with audiences, embodying the spirit of adventure and exploration.

Beyond its cinematic accolades, Chander Pahar also marked a global milestone for Bengali cinema, showcasing the industry’s ability to produce large-scale, visually stunning films that can resonate internationally.
