Angelo Mathews named as Sri Lanka's long term limited overs captain

Colombo, Jan 9 (IBNS): Sri lankan senior all rounder Angelo Mathews has been named as the long term captain for the national side in limited overs cricket.

The outgoing captain Dinesh Chandimal has been recalled by the selectors.

The selectors, after the suggestion from new head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, have taken the decision unanimously to bring back Mathews as the leader of the Sri Lankan cricket team in ODIs and T20Is.

The decision is a part of the head coach's short, mid and long term plans to take the Sri Lankan cricket to winning heights, said Thilanga Sumathipala, President of Sri Lankan cricket board.

Mathews, who will take over the charge from Chandimal, said the elevation to the skipper's position is an honour for him.

Reacting to the announcement, Mathews said: "It’s a thing you don’t ever think of taking back. There were a few reasons I decided to take it back as the president’s request was that it was a national call, and also considering the fact that we need stability running to the world cup in eighteen months’ time."

" Cricket has given me a lot, and if I turn my back I feel it is not fair by my country," he added.
