Atletico de Kolkata retains midfielder Borja Fernandez

Kolkata, June 18 (IBNS): The champions of the inaugural edition of Indian Super League, Atletico de Kolkata on Wednesday announced that the team has retained the central midfielder Borja Fernandez, from its last year's international line up.

 Returning to Spain after ISL, Borja signed on six-month contract with La Liga club.  After the announcement of signing Iain Edward Hume and retaining two international recruits Josemi and Oftense Nato for this season, the team has now decided to keep one of its star player from the last season, hoping for an encore during the upcoming season.

Borja Fernández, played as a Midfielder for Atletico de Kolkata in the inaugural session of Indian Super League. He has played a total of 187 games in La Liga.

They also announced that after retaining their Head Coach Antonio López Habas for the second season of the Indian Super League (ISL), Atlético de Kolkata decided to retain Fitness Expert Miguel Martinez and Goalkeeping Coach Predipkumar Bhaktawer.


“Our head coach and the management are making some prudent choices which will enable us to perform the best in the upcoming season. The overall experience of the players we have selected till date is a rich blend of experience along with diversity in their styles of playing the game,” said Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman RP- Sanjiv Goenka Group, Co-owner, Atlético de Kolkata

Antonio Lopez Habas, Head Coach, Atlético de Kolkata, said: "Fitness trainer is an integral part of a professional soccer team. I and the  management was satisfied with the performance of Miguel Martinez in the last season hence decided to keep him for this year too. Despite the packed fixture last year (ISL), we performed at an optimum level of fitness on the pitch.”
