Melbourne, Jan 15 (IBNS):  2017 runner-up Venus Williams was stunned in the first round of the women's singles event of the Australia Open as she was defeated by Belinda Bencic here on Monday.

The Swiss, ranked 78th, defeated her opponent  6-3 7-5.

Monday marked the first day of the mega first grand slam event of the year.

The first day of the tournament itself witnessed the shock of Venus Williams exit from the earliest round of the event.

"It means so much to me," Belinda Bencic told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I lost to Venus four times and I tried my best to give my all today, and changed some things tactically," she said.

"I think it was a huge opportunity and I used it, so I was very relieved after the match point. After the injury and the tough times it's really an amazing feeling," she said.
