Bangladesh beat England by 15 runs, reach q/f
Adelaide, Mar 9 (IBNS): Creating history, Bangladesh defeated England by 15 runs to reach the quarter-finals of the ICC World Cup here on Monday.
Riding on Mahmudullah's 103, Bangladewsh posted a competitive 275 runs on the scorecard for the loss of seven wickets while their bowlers gave a good response to bowl out England for 260 runs in 48.3 overs.
Bangladesh made the worst possible start to the innings as Tamim Iqbal (2) and Imrul Kayes (2) departed early with only eight runs on the scorecard. James Anderson took both the wickets.
Bangladesh came back strongly with Mahmudullah, Soumya Sarkar (40) and Mushfiqur Rahim (89) contributing with their willows in this crucial encounter.
The loss came as a shock for English fans as their national side crashed out of the tournament after winning only a single match out of the five encounters they have played so far.
Mahmudullah became the first Bangladeshi batsman to score a century in the World Cup.
He hit seven boundaries and two sixes in his knock while adding 141 runs in the fifth wicket partnership with ex-skipper Mushfiqur Rahim.
Anderson and Chris Jordan took two wickets each for England.
Rubel Hossain took four wickets to destroy the English line up as they were bowled out for 260 runs.
Ian Bell (63), Jos Buttler (65) and Chris Woakes (42*) failed to reach the target despite scoring some runs and giving their opponent some challenge. At the end, Woakes did not get the support from the other end that was needed to script the victory.
With Bangladesh's victory, Sri Lanka also secured a place in the next stage of the tournament.
