Bangur Cement and Ajaya Bagaria’s team along with six others qualified for the Super League

Kolkata: Champions Bangur Cement topped the ten round Swiss Leage and qualified for the eight –team round robin Super League of the team event along with seven others on the penultimate day of the Tollygunge Club 7th Invitational Bridge Tournament  being held at the Club complex here Saturday.

Bangur Cement, comprising S K Aienger (capt), Debashish Roy, R Venkatraman and Suman  Sengupta garnered 147.52 Victry Points (VPs) and were followed by their arch rivals Ajay Bagaria’s team who collected 134.31 VPs.Beside these two others who have made it to the Super League are Spartans (125.66 VPs), Crackers ( 118.84 VPs),Sathak Bhuria’s Team ( 118.80 VPs), Dakshin Kolikata Sansad (115.16 Vps), M Giri’s IV  (114.15 VPs) and Tolly Bridgers (107.06 Vps).

At the end of the ten rounds for the team event, which have been played in Swiss League system on the first two days, top seven teams along with one team from the host Tollygunge Club have entered the knoc-out stage to  be held on the concluding day tomorrow. Competitions for the pairs event would also be held on Sunday.

“Tenasious Turtles” the lone all ladies team from Delhi comprising Deepika Mehta (Captain), Neeta Bahel, Monica Sachdev, Kusum Chadha, Anjali Talwar and Manju Bhasin   though could not make it to the knock-out round, played made  some good fight before ending at the 19th position with 100.65 (VPs) out of total 32 teams. Captain of the Turtles, Deepika Mohta said the team hope to put up a better show when they would be back in the city to play the National Championship in Dec next.

The championship turned out to be keenly contested affair between Bangur Cement and Ajaya Bagaria’s team and the lead changed alternately between the two teams, both of which comprised of  international players. After being at the second position on the inaugural day, Bangur Cement snatched the lead at the end of 7th round this morning and held on to that till the completion of the Swiss league.

Dakshin Kolikata Sansad, known as DKS, also displayed fine acumen in the later stage of the Swiss league  to qualify for the  Super league.
