CWG Women's Hockey: India defeat Ghana 5-0

Birmingham: India women hockey team kick started Commonwealth Games campaign with a 5-0 win over Ghana in opening Pool A match here on Friday.

Gurjit Kaur (2'and 39') scored a brace while Neha (30'), Sangita Kumari (36') and Salima Tete (56') also netted for India.

Gurjit scored in the first quarter as India took one-goal lead against Ghana. India dominated possession in the first quarter and created the better chances to score, keeping the Ghanaian defense busy.

India continued to dominate the ball possession as midfielder Neha netted the goal in the second quarter to extend the lead 2-0.

Gurjit scored her second goal and Sangita added to the scoresheet in the third quarter to stretch the lead 4-0 over Ghana. Then Tete's goal in 56th minutes helped India to wrap up the win in the opening fixture.

The Indian women will next play Wales in the second Pool stage match on Saturday.
