Mumbai/IBNS: Shikhar Dhawan's 88 backed by the bowlers helped Punjab Kings defeat defending champions Chennai Super Kings by 11 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Monday.

Batting first, Punjab, despite having a slow start, reached 187/4 in 20 overs, courtesy Dhawan's 88 off 59 balls.

Dhawan was supported by B Rajapaksa, who scored 42 off 32 balls and a cameo by Liam Livingstone's seven-ball 19.

Chasing the target, Chennai, who took the game to the last over, ended up scoring 176/6 in 20 overs.

After a dull top order outing, Ambati Rayudu fought for Chennai with his aggressive batting.

When Rayudu was dismissed for 39-ball 78, the task was left for celebrated finisher Mahendra Singh Dhoni who, however, in this match failed to take the yellow brigade beyond the line.

Needing almost all big hits in the last over, Dhoni failed to score them getting dismissed for 12.
