Mumbai, June 22 (IBNS) Despite losing the series against Bangladesh, former Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar feels that Indian limited overs cricket skipper MS Dhoni deserves respect and it is not fair to ask the World Cup winning captain to step down.

"Dhoni deserves respect. I don't think it is fair to ask him to step aside. You can't take the achievements away from him and he has been India's best skipper by far," Gavaskar told NDTV.

"Out of sheer respect for him, we should let him take a call on his future as captain of the ODI team," he said.

Dhoni on Sunday said he was ready to step down if that helped Indian cricket to perform really well in the coming days.

India lost two consecutive ODI matches against Bangladesh to lose the series.

Bangladesh has taken an  unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series.
