Gautam Gambhir retires from all forms of cricket
New Delhi, Dec 4 (IBNS): Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, 37, announced his retirement from all forms of the game on Tuesday.
In an announcement on Twitter, the southpaw wrote, "The most difficult decisions are often taken with the heaviest of hearts. And with one heavy heart, I’ve decided to make an announcement that I’ve dreaded all my life."
He linked the tweet to a video on Facebook where he is seen talking about his struggles with failing form that led him to make the decision.
"Yes, my time was up," he said.
"So here I am... after more than 15 years of cricket for my country, I want to retire from playing this beautiful game," he added in the video uploaded in the evening.
Gambhir made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in 2003 and played his first international Test the following year against Australia.
He captained the Indian team in six ODIs during 2010-2011 with India winning all the matches. He played important roles in India's T20 World Cup win in 2007 and Cricket World Cup in 2011.
The Indian government gave Gambhir the Arjuna Award, the country's second highest sporting award, in 2008. He was the top-ranked ICC batsman in 2009.
Gambhir has played 58 Tests scoring 4,158 runs and 147 ODIs scoring 5,238 runs.
