Indian coach Gautam Gambhir has already started experimenting with his team as during the practice session Hardik Pandya was seen bowling legspins ahead of the first T20 match against Sri Lanka.

Gambhir's first assignment for the country is against Sri Lanka where India will play T20 and ODI series.

Hardik is an all-rounder and overlooking him Indian selectors decided to pass the baton of captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav.

Pandya was the vice-captain of the T20 team which won the World Cup in West Indies under Rohit Sharma's leadership.

Yadav will step into the shoes of T20 World Cup skipper Rohit Sharma who retired from the 20-over format last month after winning the title.

Shubman Gill, who recently led the Indian team to victory in the T20 series in Zimbabwe, has been named the vice-captain of the squad.

Virat Kohli and Sharma returned to the ODI squad.

Sharma will lead the team in the ODI format in the series against the 1996 World Cup champion team.

Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested from the series.

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana.

Team India will play three T20Is and as many ODIs in the series.

The T20I leg of the series, which will take place in Pallekele, kicks off on July 27th and concludes on July 30th.

The ODIs will be played in Colombo, starting August 02.
