George Floyd death: Liverpool footballers kneel to support #BlackLivesMatter movement

Liverpool/IBNS: The entire squad of football club Liverpool took to their knees in support of the movement against the death of African-American man George Floyd in Minneapolis of the United States.

In support of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the footballers ahead of their training session in Anfield's centre took to their knees calling for a "unity".

Floyd, a Houston native who had worked as a nightclub security guard, was arrested after being accused of trying to pass counterfeit money at a corner store.

Video footage shows Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes before he uttered "I can't breathe" and died.

Earlier Manchester United player Paul Pogba took to his Instagram account to protest against racism.

In a long post, the footballer wrote,"During the past few days I have thought a lot about how to express my feelings about what happened in Minneapolis. I felt anger, pity, hatred, indignation, pain, sadness. Sadness for George and for all black people who suffer from racism EVERY DAY! Whether in football, at work, at school, ANYWHERE!

This has to stop, once and for all! Not tomorrow or the next day, it has to end TODAY! Violent acts of racism can no longer be tolerated. I can’t tolerate. I won’t tolerate. WE WON’T TOLERATE. Racism is ignorance. LOVE is intelligence. STOP the silence. STOP racism." (sic)

Massive protests rocked different cities across the US throughout Sunday over the May 25 killing of black man Floyd by the 44-year old white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While protest with placards screaming "I can't breathe" (the words of the dead man when he was pinned down by the cop), continued, the agitators also went violent against what they called police brutality and resorted to arson and looting with cars and buildings set ablaze amid clashes with cops.

After a massive gathering of thousands of people resorted to violence on Sunday night in Portland, Oregon, the Portland Police Department arrested 12 adults and two juveniles.

According to the police department, the crowd was initially marching peacefully until about 11:30 p.m. local time when some protesters started throwing projectiles at officers.

Earlier media reports stated that US President Donald Trump along with his family in the face of the massive protest last Friday took refuge in an underground bunker at the White House, the residence of the American President.
