Hockey legend Balbir Singh passes away at 95

Chandigarh/IBNS: Legendary Hockey player and three-time Olympic gold champion Balbir Singh Dosanjh passed away on Monday.

He was 95.

He is survived by his daughter Sushbir and three sons Kanwalbir, Karanbir and Gurbir.

Balbir Sr. was in a semi-comatose state since May 18.

He was admitted to hospital with bronchial pneumonia with high fever. He had developed a blood clot in his brain.

Balbir Sr, who is considered as a modern Dhyanchand, holds the record of most goals scored by an individual in an Olympic men's hockey final.

Singh as the manager and chief coach of the Indian team led the Asian country to 1975 Men's Hockey World Cup victory.

Hockey India condoled the legend's demise tweeting, "Hockey India extends its condolences to fans, friends and family of the 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist and Padma Shri Awardee, Balbir Singh Sr."
