Ranchi, Mar 17 (IBNS); A dogged innings from Australian skipper Steven Smith has helped his side put on 401 runs for the loss of seven wickets, here on Friday, day two of the third Test match against India.

Even with wickets tumbling at the other end, Smith has held his own and is presently unbeaten on 153 runs.

The Aussie skipper has hit 16 of the 318 balls he has faced for fours.

Earlier in the day, resuming their innings on 299 runs, the unbeaten pair of Maxwell and Smith 32 runs more to the total before the former was caught by Saha off Ravindra Jadeja.

Maxwell departed for a well made 104 runs off 185 balls.

His maiden Test hundred comprised of nine fours and a couple of sixes.

Following Maxwell's dismissal, Smith forged another 64-run partnership with wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade, who departed for 37 runs.

Pat Cummins, who made a comeback to the Test side after a long gap, failed to disturb the scorers, as his innings only two balls.

Jadeja is by the best Indian bowler in the match, accounting for four of the seven Australian wickets.

Umesh Yadav has picked up a couple of wickets, followed by Ashwin, who has one to show for his efforts.
