IPL opener: Gambhir, Yadav guide KKR to victory against MI

Kolkata, Apr 8 (IBNS): Kolkata Knight Riders commenced their title defence with a victory as they defeated Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in the opening match of the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.

Chasing Mumbai's 168 for three, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir (57) and Suryakumar Yadav (46*) guided the side to 170 for the loss of three wickets with seven balls to spare.

Gambhir played a matured knock of 57 runs off 43 balls, hammering seven boundaries and a six while Yadav joined the party later as he played a blistering unbeaten knock of 46 runs to ensure Shah Rukh Khan's side the first win in the tournament. 

Yadav thrashed the bowlers for five sixes and boundary in his 20-ball knock.

Manish Pandey played a crucial knock of 24-ball 40.

Pandey and Gambhir added 85 runs in the second wicket partnership after Robin Uthappa (9) departed early.

It was Yusuf Pathan (14*) and Yadav who added 49 runs in the fourth wicket partnership to reach the target at the end.

Harbhajan Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Corey Anderson took a wicket each for Mumbai.

Earlier, a sizzling unbeaten 98 by Rohit Sharma helped Mumbai Indians post 168 runs for the loss of three wickets in the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against (KKR).
