IPL to be played in India this year from Mar 23
Mumbai, Jan 8 (IBNS): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced that the Indian Premier League will be held in India this year.
The announcement is crucial as India will vote to elect a new Parliament this year.
The board said the tournament will start from Mar 23.
It is to be noted that the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) met on Tuesday to discuss the venues and window for the IPL 2019.
"Based on the preliminary discussions with the appropriate central and state agencies / authorities, it was decided that the 12th edition of the world's most popular and competitive T20 tournament will be scheduled to be played in India," read the statement issued by the board.
"It is proposed that the VIVO IPL 2019 will commence on March 23, 2019. The detailed schedule will be finalised in consultation with the appropriate authorities," it said.
"The COA will then have detailed discussion with all the Stakeholders before releasing the VIVO IPL 2019 Schedule," the board said.
The tournament has always been played in April and ended in May except in the year 2010 when it had commenced in the month of March.
IPL played twice outside India:
The tournament was played outside India in 2009 and in 2014.
In 2009, the tournament was shifted to South Africa.
Some matches of the tournament were played in the UAE in 2014.
Lok Sabha polls were held in the country in both the years.
World Cup to be played from May:
The 50-over World Cup will be played in England this year.
The grand event will commence from May 30.
