Kolkata: School Regatta begins at Lake Club, DAV Public School from Chandigarh shines

Kolkata, May 28 (IBNS): DAV Public School from Chandigarh stole the limelight winning their hit easily over city based Khalsa English High School in Sr Boys Fours event on the opening day of the 45th KC Mahindra All India Invitation School Regatta , organized by Lake Club at Rabindra Sarobar here Sunday.

DAV Pubic School represented by Akash Deep Singh, Shahwinder Singh, Karamchand and Harpreet Singh shown their robustness in handling the oars and rowed  the 500 mts length maintain huge  lead  all the way.

Incidentally,  the Regatta, being organized by the Lake Club Ltd, is the biggest ever rowing championship in India in school level.

In the  second hit of the day  for Sr Girls in Fours  Khalsa English High School got row over the Ballygunge Siksha Sadan School as the latter did not turn up.

Over  300  students, both boys and girls  from 32  schools in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and  Chandigarh   are taking part in the 7-day competition.

Besides the winning schools of the last edition like La Martiniere for Girls, South Point High School, Modern High Schools for Girls, Khalsa English High School, Future Hope, Asoke Hall,  St Lawrence, St Helen in the city, jatragachi High School at Rajarhat , Tirthapati Institution and Mitra High School are among the  institutions  that wouid take part in the grueling championship.

The regatta is open for boys and girls in senior(  Class  XI   and XII ) and junior category ( up to class X) .
Besides rowing on water, indoor rowing, swimming  and quiz competition will be concurrently held at the same venue to  popularize the equipment aided sport. Lake Club is the only club in the country to initiate such moves.

Earlier West Bengal Urban development Minister Firhad Hakim declared the meet
Open and urged the concerned  people to bring a  professional approach in rowing  like that of  cricket and soccer.  He hoped that future  champions in the country would emerge  from  these participants. He also assured necessary  governmental support for this water sport in the state.

Earlier,  Lake Club president  Mukund kulkarni welcomed all the participants  and urged them  to enjoy  the  competition.
