Maria Sharapova's Wimbledon journey ends after 1st round defeat

London, July 4 (IBNS): Wimbledon tournament witnessed a stunning exit when Maria Sharapova of Russia was defeated in the first round of the women's singles event by  132nd-ranked countrywoman Vitalia Diatchenko.

Vitalia defeated the Russian Tennis icon  6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 on Tuesday.

Maria was playing her first Wimbledon since returning to the WTA Tour last year after serving a 15-month doping suspension.

However, Maria's run in the tournament was short-lived.

Vitalia came from a set and  5-2 down to beat former champion Maria.

World number 50 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus on the other hand defeated two-time champion Petra Kvitova 6-4 4-6 6-0.
