Neeraj Chopra clinches historic silver at World Athletics Championships

After clinching the silver, Chopra became the first man and the second Indian to win a medal at the world championships since Anju Bobby Gerage won bronze in the women's triple jump event in 2003 in Paris.

Chopra made a disappointing start with a foul. The 24-year-old posted 82.39m and 86.37m in his second and third attempts, respectively and was trailing in the fourth position.

He recorded the best throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt. However, his last throw was a recorded foul but he had done enough to win India its maiden silver medal at the world championships.

After winning the silver, Chopra said: "While conditions were not good and the wind speed was too high, I was confident I would perform well. I am satisfied with the result, I am happy I was able to win a medal for my country."

"I am feeling very happy today as I won a silver medal for the country. I will try to better at the World Championships next year. I also want to thank SAI, TOPS, Athletics Federation and the government of India for supporting me and allowing me to train abroad. I hope that we'll get the same support in other sports so that we can make India proud. Thank you," he added.

Congratulating Chopra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: "A great accomplishment by one of our most distinguished athletes! Congratulations to @Neeraj_chopra1 on winning a historic Silver medal at the #WorldChampionships. This is a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes to Neeraj for his upcoming endeavours."

Another Indian in the fray, Rohit Yadav finished his campaign in tenth place with the best effort of 78.72m. His two earlier attempts measured 77.96m and 78.05m.

Peterson Anders successfully defended his title with a massive 9.54m throw. Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch bagged the bronze with 88.9m.
