School Regatta

Oldest school regatta to begin from June 2 in Kolkata's Lake Club

Kolkata/IBNS: The 49th All India Invitation Inter-School Regatta Championship, the oldest school rowing event in the country and organised by Lake Club here, will be held at Rabindra Sarovar Lake in Kolkata after a gap of four years during June 2 to 9.

Addressing media at the club premises, Captain of Boats of Lake Club Sudip Naha informed that more than 150 students, both boys and girls, from 30 schools in and around the city will take part in this popular event for the top honours.

Naha said that with the motto of "Catch Them Young", the club is going to organise the event to promote rowing among the students.

"The entire cost of training, providing boats and other necessary equipment and other facilities are provided for free to all the participants by the club and without any financial implication to the students," he added.

Speaking on the occasion, convenor of the meet Abhijit Basu said the championship would consist of two events - Fours and Double Scull both for Juniors (up to class X) and Seniors (Class XI and XII).

Apart from Rowing on the water, there would be indoor rowing competition also which is now a world event.

Joint convenor of the meet Soumen Sarkar intimated that  the event has emerged as the nursery for the budding rowers.

Some of them like Pratik Gupta, Sweta Brahmachari and Mayurakshi Mukherjee, who are now making podium finish at the senior national level tournaments, are the products of this school regatta.

Pratik would be leaving for Rotterdam in July next to take part at the World University Regatta Championship.

They apart, three other school rowers - Arman, Devanshh and Sanskar, who had their initiayion in school regatta here are now part of the khelo India Programme.

Talking about the safety of the rowers during the competition, convenor Abhijit Basu said all necessary safety measures have been taken.

"All the participants had to pass the standard operating procedure enforced by the government," Basu added.
