Punjab govt names 10 govt schools after Olympic medal winning hockey players: Singla

Chandigarh: Punjab School Education and PWD Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Sunday said that the state government has named the schools of the respective areas after Olympic medal winner hockey players.

Singla said that Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has given the approval to rename schools after the name of 11 Punjabi players of the Indian hockey team who won the bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020.

He said that Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) Mithapur, Jalandhar has been named after our hockey team captain Manpreet Singh and now the school will be known as Olympian Manpreet Singh Government Senior Secondary School Mithapur.

Singla said that GSSS Timmowal Amritsar has been named after Vice Captain Harmanpreet Singh who was the top scorer in the Olympics for India with six goals. He said that now the school will be known as Olympian Harmanpreet Singh GSSS, Timmowal.

He said that Government Primary School Mithapur, Jalandhar has been named as Olympian Mandeep Singh Varun Kumar Government Primary School Mithapur, Jalandhar. He said that both the players performed very well during Olympics being striker and defence players, respectively.

He said that GSSS Attari, Amritsar will now be known as Olympian Shamsher Singh Government Senior Secondary School Attari who was a successful midfielder during the tournament.

The Minister said that Government Middle School, Basic girls Faridkot has been named as Olympian Rupinderpal Singh Government Middle School, Basic girls Faridkot as Rupinderpal also beautifully scored 4 goals in the Tokyo Olympics.

He said that Government Middle School Khusropur, Jalandhar has been named Olympian Hardik Singh Government Middle School Khusropur, Jalandhar as Hardik played a very crucial role in the Knock Out stage.

He said that Government Primary School Khalaihara, Amritsar has been named as Olympian Gurjant Singh Government Primary School Khalaihara, Amritsar. The GSSS Butala, Amritsar has been named as Olympian Dilpreet Singh Government Senior Secondary School Butala, Amritsar. He said that both Gurjant and Dilpreet were playing as strikers in the Indian Hockey squad.

He said that Government High School Chahal Kalan, Gurdaspur has been named as Olympian Simranjit Singh Government High School Chahal Kalan, Gurdaspur as an honour to Simranjit’s two goals in the bronze medal match. He said that GSSS Hussainpur, RCF, Kapurthala has been named as Olympian Krishan B. Pathak Government Senior Secondary School Hussainpur, RCF, Kapurthala. He said that Pathak played as the reserve goalkeeper in the Indian team.

He said that there was a golden contribution of Punjab in the field of Indian sports and it has sent the second-largest contingent in Olympics in the country as 20 sportspersons were from Punjab out of total 124.

Singla, who is also holding the charge of PWD informed that apart from this, the roads connecting to the residence or village or area of the respective medal winner player will also be named after him. He added that it would motivate the students and other youth to excel in the sports activities of their interests.
