Rahul Tripathi's 93 gives Pune 4 wickets win over Kolkata at packed Eden Gardens

Kolkata, May 3 (IBNS) Rahul Tripathi's career best 52-ball 93 helped Rising Pune Supergiant to a thrilling 4 wickets triumph over Kolkata Knight Riders at packed to the capacity Eden Gardens here on Wednesday night.

Chasing KKR 155/8, RPS scored 158 for loss of six wickets with four balls remaining in 20 overs.

Tripathi was the toast of the packed fans of the night as he almost single handed effort steered RPS to the door of thrilling win.

His career best 93 runs in IPL came came from 9 boundaries and 7 sixes, that silenced the home crowds. He was out by a superb catch held by substitute fielder R Powel off Kuldeep Yadav at mid-wicket.

The other batsmen of the visiting side had poor show for the night like Ajinkya Rahane (11), Steven Smith (9), Manoj Tiwari (8), Ben Stokes, who scored 103 in previous game against Gujarat Lions, was out on 14 and MS Dhoni was out on 5.

The sixth win in last 7 games put Steven Smith side close to a semifinal berth with 14 points from 11 matches, and wait for such a place for last four for KKR remain further longer. KKR also with 14 points from 11 matches.

This was KKR's second defeat at home and back to back loss after away play in Hyderabad.

At a time KKR were the first to hit on 16 points, a gateway to the play off matches, but Mumbai Indians made their entry first and KKR have been stranded after two back to back defeat.

For KKR Chris Woakes took 3/18, followed by Umesh Yadav 1/23, Sunil Naaine 1/28 and KuldeepYadav 1/35.

Earlier Surya Kumar Yadav's 16-ball-30 took KKR to score 155/8 after being sent to bat first.

Some blistering batting from mid and tail-ender in humid and heat condition, the packed Eden Gardens enjoyed the scoring from boredom to hilarious batting.

Surya Kumar Yadav, came in for injured and inform Robin Uthappa, was unbeaten on 30 from 16 balls hitting two 4s and 2 6s.

KKR without their injured opener Robin Uthappa began innings very shakily and conceded stop-gap opener Sunil Naraine (0) wicket without adding anything on first over. KKR were 0-1 in first over.

West Indian bowling sensation Sunil Naraine hurled his bat wildly the first five balls from Jaidev Unadkad without connecting and each ball was collected by wicket-keeper MS Dhoni on the back. The sixth ball came straight on wicket and Naraine hit straight to the bowler for grabbing.

Then Gautam Gambhir and Sheldon Jackson tried to score a bit but tight fielding and discipline bowling prevented KKR from getting into run. Jackson ( 10) was out off pacer Washington Sundar while trying to take a single but his right leg hit the wicket.

Gambhir, who had been on good nick in this current session, could not hit ball correctly initially but when his bat began to flowering Ajinkya Rahane had him catch on long on
from Sundar delivery.

Gambhir's 24 runs came from 19 balls with three to fence and one big six.

KKR, looking for a berth into the last four, had poor run rate in first 10 overs fetching only 59 runs conceding 4 wickets. Yusuf Pathan, who has been regular in the side, scored only 4 from 9 balls before getting leg before wicket from Imran Tahir.

Only 5th wicket batting between Manish Pandey and Colin de Grandhomme got KKR into a respectable 48 runs partnership on Wednesday night. Manish Pandey's 37 from 32 balls had 4 boundaries and a six and Grandhomme's 36 was studded with three fours and two sixes from 19 deliveries.

Jaidev Unadkad took 2/28, followed by Sundar Washington 2/18,  Imran Tahir 1/36, Dan Christian 1/23 and Ben Stokes 1/24.
