Second Test: India take a 157 run lead after bowling out Sri Lanka for 306 on day three

Colombo, Aug 22 (IBNS) India finished day three with a lead of 157 runs after restricting Sri Lanka for 306 in their first innings on day three, here on Saturday.

The visitors have put up 70 runs for the loss of a wicket at stumps.

Resuming on their overnight score of 140, Sri Lanka added another 166 runs, riding on skipper Angelo Mathews chivalrous 102.

In his 167-ball knock, the Sri Lankan skipper smashed 12 fours and along with Lahiru Thirimanne (62) added 127 runs for the fourth wicket.

All the five Indian bowlers picked up wickets. Amit Mishra accounted for 4 scalps, giving away 43 runs.

Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up 2 each.

Ishant came back strongly in the afternoon session to first remove Thirimanne and then sent back the in-form Dinesh Chandimal for 11.

Once Stuart Binny removed Mathews things became easy for the visitors as they produced wickets at regular intervals to end the opposition’s innings.

Starting their second innings, K L Rahul was removed early for 2 by Dhammika Prasad as India were reduced to 3 for the loss of a wicket.

Ajinkya Rahane and Murali Vijay stitched a 67 runs unbeaten partnership to take their team safely home before the umpires decided to call it a day.

Rahane (28) and Vijay (39) are at the crease.
