Kolkata, Oct 6 (IBNS): Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and Asian gold medalist Swapna Barman have launched the fifth edition of Tata Steel Kolkata (TSK) 25K here.

The event began in 2014.

In a new development, the International Association Athletics Federations (IAAF) has accorded Bronze Label Race to the TSK 25 K this year.

This label is awarded to races based on criteria, including organizational competence, elite field representation, equal prize money for male and female runners, medical support system, live television coverage, timing for participants and qualified personnel to ensure smooth conduct of the event across departments, among others.

In addition, it also considers the course measurements, sanitation of the route which includes - safety and quality of the route, restrictions on traffic to allow free movement for runners within the specified time, facilities provided on course for a pleasant running experience for all participants.

Speaking about the event, Ganguly said: "It is a great initiative. It is (actually) beyond an initiative. The TSK has become a part of Kolkata. This sort of event will get the city going."

"I get up every time when the marathon happens. Its unbelievable. We see participants coming from Kenya and other countries," he said.

Sunil Bhaskaran, Vice President Corporate Services, Tata Steel Ltd., said: "Tata Steel is proud to be the Title Sponsor of the Tata Steel Kolkata 25 K run, which went international last year.

"I am sure that the biggest running event of eastern India will get bigger this year with increased participation of professional athletes, amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts, old and young alike."

TSK 25K 2018 will be held on Dec 16.
