Sourav Ganguly wants IFA to play a bigger role

Kolkata, July 8 (IBNS) Ex-Indian captain and co-owner of Atletico de Kolkata, the cash-rich ISL (Indian Super League) based team, Sourav Ganguly wants the Indian Football Association to play a bigger role in the upliftment of standards of football in India.

Speaking to the reporters here, Ganguly, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, said, “The IFA (Indian Football Association) has to play a much bigger role if football in India is to go forward with the help of ISL. It cannot be the other way around.”

Ganguly said, “The IFA will have to take up a very important role and in terms of time it’s very difficult though. To be honest it (development) has not happened and the standards haven’t improved for a while, but we can try.”

He lauded the concept of Indian Super League and feels it will help in shaping up Indian football.

Ganguly said, “The ISL is a great platform for the Indian players to be a part of. I think the success of any sport nationally and internationally depends on the infrastructure and the entire system. ISL is for a period of two months, it provides an infrastructure for the individual franchise.”
