Ranchi, Mar 17 (IBNS) : Riding an ,unbeaten 117 by skipper Steven Smith, Australia took a commanding position piling up 299 for four wickets in their first innings at the end of the first day of the third test against India on Thursday.

Smith, who slammed his 19th century in  test career, was ably assisted by middle order batsman Glenn Maxwell (82 not out)-both putting up 159 runs in the fifth wicket.

The ton meant Smith became the youngest Aussie cricket player to reach 5000 career runs in Test, overcoming former captain Ricky Ponting. His 117 came off 244 balls.

Earlier, openers David Warner (19) and Matt Renshaw (44) went back to pavilion respectively at the team's total of 50 and 80.

Before Smith, the number three batsman, could settle for a flourish, Shaun Marsh (2) was the the third one to go very soon when the score read 89 and the visitors looked in trouble. After Peter Handscomb (19) was also out, Smith and Maxwell joined for a long partnership to take the team to a respectable position.

For Indian bowlers, pacer Umesh Yadav proved most successful having claimed two scalps for 63 runs while spinners Ashwin and Jadeja bagged one apiece.
