Surprised not to see Shubman Gill, Ajinkya Rahane in ODI team: Sourav Ganguly lashes out at selectors

Kolkata, July 24 (IBNS): Lashing out at the Indian selectors, former skipper Sourav Ganguly said he is surprised to see players like Shubman Gill and Ajinkya Rahane missing out from the One Day International (ODI) squad.

Recently, the selectors have picked the Indian squad for the Windies tour.

Reminding the selectors that teams should not be picked to make all happy, Ganguly said certain players must be given opportunity in all formats of the game.

"Time has come for indian selectors to pick same players in all formats of the game for rhythm and confidence.. too few are playing in all formats ..great teams had consistent players ..it’s not about making all happy but picking the best for the country and be consistent.." the former skipper said.

"There are many in the squad who can play all formats ..surprised not to see shubman gill ..Rahane in the one day squad.." he added.

The controversy over the team selection cropped up first during the Cricket World Cup 2019 when standby cricketer Ambati Rayudu was ignored despite two players were injured.

As replacements for Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar, the selectors had sent Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal, not picking Rayudu. Eventually, disappointed Rayudu had announced his retirement from international cricket.

Earlier Ganguly had criticised the Indian team management's tactics in the World Cup semifinal when senior pro Mahendra Singh Dhoni was not sent at a time India were reeling at 6/3 against New Zealand.

Eventually, India had lost the match with Dhoni, who came out to bat at number 7, failing to take his team home.

Ganguly had also raised question over Dhoni's "intent" when he was trying to pick singles against England despite the asking run rate was going up.
