Unfancied Avinash causes big upset in Junior Snooker
Ishpreet Chadha was the front-runner for the National Junior title having already won the Sub-junior Snooker and Junior Billiards titles at the BRC Gloster National Billiards & Snooker Championship being played here at the Bengal Rowing Club.
On Saturday, Avinash was the cynosure of all eyes after having made his way to the top-4 from the Qualifiers.
His form can be gauged from the fact that he has won all his games in straight sets without losing even a single frame in the tournament.
The low-profile youngster took up the cue seven years back and is ranked No. 2 in Delhi in the Senior & Junior Snooker and Junior Billiards categories.
He caused the biggest upset in the Championships so far by defeating the Sub-junior Snooker and Junior Billiards champion, Ishpreet Chadha who was the front-runner for national junior title, in straight set of frames 3-0 (89-46, 58-8,75-33).
The score line itself being testimony to the way he dominated the match.
Ishpreet competed well in the first frame but fell short of Avinash’s score. After losing the second frame tamely, Ishpreet again tried with a few points in the third frame but that was not enough to stop Avinash.
Avinash will now vie with Hritik Jain (Madhya Pradesh), S. Shrikrishna (Tamil Nadu) and M.L. Laxman (Karnakata) for the Junior Snooker title which will be played among them in a round-robin league of best of seven frames each.
The Senior Billiards Qualifying matches also started today to select the four qualifiers who will join in the main round which will start from Monday, the 12th January.
