US Open: Leander-Martina win mixed doubles title

New York, Sept 12 (IBNS) The oldest pair of this year’s US Open in the competitive section lifted the mixed doubles title as Leander Peas and Martina Hingis played some scintillating tennis to beat their opponent Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey of USA and win the championship, here on Friday.

Taking on the unseeded American pair, the Indo-Swiss fourth seeded pair of Paes and Hingis took the first set 6-4. They however lost the next one 3-6 to push the game to a decider.

The experienced pair held on to their won and won it 10-7 to set up a win in the big final.

This is Leander’s 10th Grand Slam win in Mixed Doubles, 18th overall. He had earlier won the same tournament in the same category in 2008.

Hingis won her debut US Open Mixed Doubles title. She had earlier won 18 Grand Slams in Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles categories.
