Wellington Test: Rain forces play to stop on day 1, India struggle at 122/5
Wellington/IBNS: India are struggling at 122/5 as rain stopped the first day's play of the maiden Test in the two-match series at Basin Reserve here on Friday.
New Zealand won the toss in the morning and sent Virat Kohli's men to bat first.
India very early lost the wicket of young opening batsman Prithvi Shaw who was sent back to pavilion by Tim Southee for just 16.
Shaw was followed by two of the main Indian batsmen, Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Kohli, who scored 11 and 2 respectively.
Though a partnership was slowly building up between Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane, Trent Boult picked the former dismissing him for 34.
Agarwal scored 34 off 84 deliveries hitting five fours in his innings.
In less than seven overs, Kyle Jamieson, who picked three wickets including the ones of Pujara and Kohli in the day, sent back Hanuma Vihari to change room cheaply.
At the stumps on day one, Rahane, who is fighting the battle scoring 38 off 122 balls, is at the crease with young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant who is unbeaten at just 10.
