Kolkata, July 22 (IBNS): In near perfect golfing conditions over 60 teams began their campaign in pursuit of the JIS Group presented Telegraph Merchants Cup and Challenge Cup Golf 2014 that teed off at the Mecca of Indian Golf – the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Tuesday.

Williamson Magor Group `A’ team lived up to their top billing when J Gohain with a round of 72 returned the best score with Ishan Bajoria from McLeod & Co Ltd along with Gaurav Ghosh of J Thomas ‘A’returning an identical card of 75 apiece to share the second position.

In Division II it was Hitesh Gutru from Linde India Limited who shot a round of 77 to grab the lead. G Bhuyan of McLeod Russel “C”, Rakesh Poddar of Tijiya Engineering and R Mehrotra of Williamson Magor 'E' were all tied for the second spot at 81.

The Merchants’ Cup Competition stands tall on credibility for it is the world’s oldest inter-company event being played since 1906. This year too, without an exception the tournament has attracted a fairly large number of entries.

The Telegraph Cup has only evolved with the passing years, and that’s purely reflected in the sponsors which the event has managed to enroll. The event is presented by JIS Group. Partnering the event are 91.9 Friends FM, Budweiser & Coca-Cola.

The Cup is majorly broken into two categories: The Merchants’ Cup which is open only to those corporate houses which have at least three executive golfers based in the Eastern Region and The Challenge Cup which gives smaller business houses the perfect opportunity to network with people who matter.

The format of play is rather gripping and exciting. The Merchants’ Cup shall be played on Open Stroke Play and the Challenge Cup will be played on Callaway Scoring System.

A grand prize presentation ceremony at The Oberoi Grand on July 25 will bring down the curtains on the week-long golf bonanza. The prestigious event is managed by leading event management company Tiger Sports Marketing.
