World Cup winning captain MS Dhoni turns 38
Leeds, July 7 (IBNS): Former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who led the national team to two World Cup victories, turned 38 on Sunday.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni, who made his international debut in 2004, is presently playing the World Cup in England.
Though he started his career against Bangladesh with a duck, Dhoni gained prominence with his mesmerising 148-run knock against Pakistan in 2005 after he was promoted in the batting order to number 3 by then skipper Sourav Ganguly.
After that knock, Dhoni didn't look back but consolidated his position in the mighty Indian batting line up.
In 2007, Dhoni, who is referred to as 'Captain Cool', led his side as a young skipper to the maiden T20I World Cup victory. Soon he was appointed as the skipper of the ODI team.
In 2011 ODI World Cup, Dhoni's men clinched the title ending the countrymen's wait for 28 years. Going by statistics, Dhoni is recognised as the most successful captain of India.
The 'Captain Cool' retired from Test cricket in 2014 and stepped down as the captain in Jan 2017.
However, of late Dhoni's performance came under the scanner particularly due to his poor strike rate. Dhoni, the man who used to rip apart any bowling unit in his younger days, scored 28 off 52 balls against Afghanistan in this World Cup. Also his "intent" was questioned by cricket experts after he failed to accelerate while chasing a mammoth over 300-run total against England.
