Petals and Pillars – Mullick Ghat Photo Walk in Kolkata: Book Your Spot to Explore the City’s Flower Market and Riverfront
Mullick Ghat, located along the Hooghly River beneath the Howrah Bridge, is one of Kolkata’s oldest and busiest flower markets. Known as one of Asia’s largest flower hubs, it comes alive before sunrise as traders, porters, and buyers gather for the day’s business.
The surrounding riverfront and ghats reflect the area’s long connection with trade, daily life, and ritual practices, making it an important part of the city’s landscape.
Gatha – Tales of India will organise “Petals and Pillars – Mullick Ghat Photo Walk,” an early-morning heritage walk this Sunday that combines storytelling with photography. The event is designed as a cultural and visual experience, open to anyone interested in history as well as photography.

The walk will begin with a launch ride from Shobhabazar to Howrah, offering participants a view of the Hooghly River and the Howrah Bridge in the early morning. Participants will then walk across the bridge to reach the Mullick Ghat Flower Market.

At the market, the group will move through narrow lanes filled with marigolds, jasmine, roses, and lotus, stacked in heaps and made into garlands, while experiencing the vibrant flower trade. The space remains active with vendors calling out prices and porters carrying baskets, reflecting the pace of daily business.
The walk will also include visits to 3 popular ghats - Hur Gobind Shradh Ghat, Nimaicharan Mullick Ghat, and Chotelal ki Ghat. Along the route, the focus will extend beyond the flower market to the riverfront, the architecture of the ghats and the historical background of the area.
It also presents a glimpse of Kolkata’s daily life and cultural traditions, from the flower trade to their use in temple rituals. Together, these elements reflect the city’s unique character, where daily practices continue to shape its cultural fabric, making the Mullick Ghat walk a distinct and memorable experience.
